Great Draft Beer at Home Starts with a Well Maintained System

Have you ever dreamed about owning your own draft beer system at home? It’s a lot of fun to go out to bars and restaurants and enjoy a nicely poured draft, but wouldn’t it be even better to have your pour your own at home?! At Diamond Knot Brewery, we know a thing or two about draft beer systems, so let us break down everything you need to know for your own home system!

First and foremost is temperature. Keeping beer at the proper temperature is key for many reasons. The right temperature will helps prevent foamy beer. It will also keep the beer from freezing, because as cool as frozen beer may sound, a nicely poured brew is so much better. Another reason keeping your beer at the proper temperature is that it will provide optimal flavor, which is obviously very important! The temperature of your beer should be between 38 and 40 degrees Farenheit.

Next comes pressure. Maintaining the ideal pressure of CO2 (10-15PSI) is another vital piece of your draft beer system. Keeing the CO2 levels just right helps prevent foamy or flat beer, while also promoting proper head retention.

Finally is proper maintenance. Draft systems contain many parts that require replacement from time to time. You should always check all gaskets, o-rings, seals for wear and tear and check lines for leaks and mold. By doing routine checks you can keep your system in proper working order and ensure a long life of the system. Draft lines and parts get dirty and need a regular cleaning schedule to prevent mold in faucet and beer line, keep bacteria at bay, keeps fruit flies away, and allow the intended aroma and flavor to come through. Keep that baby clean!

Next time you pick up a keg or brew your own take a look at your draft system before tapping it to make sure that brew pours, tastes and smells great!
